1. 油画是西方绘画最重要的画种之一。采用油画颜料绘制作品的历史可以追溯到中世纪，到15世纪才开始被广泛使用，16世纪中叶以后，油画达到相当完美的程度。
2. 超现实主义的艺术家为了表达奇发异想，也采用了种种的特殊技法，如、拓印法（frottage）、黏贴法（collage）、自动性技法（automatism）等。此外也采用精细而写实的手法。
3. 在1905年的巴黎秋季沙龙中,一群青年美术家的作品参展,他们是H.马蒂斯﹑A.德兰﹑A.马尔凯﹑H.芒金﹑M.de弗拉曼克﹑G.鲁奥等人。在他们的作品中间,有一件展品比较写实,风格如意大利文艺复兴时代雕塑家多纳太罗的作品。批评家L.沃塞列斯在描述该展品时,用了”在一群野兽中间的一位真正的艺术家”这样一句话,把马蒂斯等年轻画家的画比作野兽,故名。
