1. 印象主义画家提倡户外写生，直接描绘在阳光下的物象，从而据弃了从16世纪以来变化甚微的褐色调子，并根据画家自己眼睛的观察和直接感受，表现微妙的色彩变化。
2. 维多利亚女王(1837-1901年在位)统治时期的英国, 是过分美化装饰的时代. 维多利亚时代的英国绘画, 至今并未获得应有的评价, 除去几位拉斐尔前派的画家外, 当时的英国画家如今几乎没有能留名在欧洲的绘画史主流中
