- 第一次世界大战最残酷的日子，它是马蒂斯最黯淡的作品时期，也是最渴望严谨性，最接近立体主义的时期。
- 黑色是黑白装饰图形的主体颜色，在一幅作品中它控制着作品的整体效果，它能体现出轻重、喜忧、从而影响整幅作品的情绪。
- 在十九世纪末，许多曾受到印象主义鼓舞的艺术家开始反对印象派，他们不满足于刻板片面的追求光色，强调作品要抒发艺术家的自我感受和主观感情，于是开始尝试对色彩及形体表现性因素的自觉运用，后印象派从此诞生。
