- “开着的窗户”也许是第一个主题达到充分发展的例子，马蒂斯的余生，一直偏爱着这种主题。它只不过是墙面的一小部分，窗户占了一大片地方。
- 印象主义吸收了柯罗、巴比松画派以及库尔贝写实主义的营养，在19世纪现代科学技术(尤其是光学理论和实践)的启发下，注重在绘画中对外光的研究和表现。
- 《夜晚的咖啡馆》是由深绿色的天花板、血红的墙壁和不和谐的绿色家具组成的梦魇。金灿灿的黄色地板呈纵向透视，以难以置信的力量进入到红色背景之中，反过来，红色背景也用均等的力量与之抗衡。这幅画是透视空间和企图破坏这个空间的逼人色彩之间的永不调和的斗争。作品预示了超现实主义用透视作为幻想表现手段的探索。

- 在同一面墙上如果需要挂3幅画，可采用平视一字形和逐渐升高的梯形排列。一字形看起来整体性强、简洁大方，梯形排列则显得错落有致、富有层次变化。
