1. 印象主义画家提倡户外写生，直接描绘在阳光下的物象，从而据弃了从16世纪以来变化甚微的褐色调子，并根据画家自己眼睛的观察和直接感受，表现微妙的色彩变化。
2. 唯美主义崇尚古希腊雕刻的情趣, 十九世纪初从雅典运来的巴特农神坛上的古希腊美女雕刻被大英博物馆收藏, 英国人第一次接触到古希腊古典大师的作品, 对十九世纪末英国艺术家产生很大影响。
