1. 可以说是奥古斯塔夫·莫罗（Gustave Moreau,1826-1898）塑造了马蒂斯。莫罗曾对马蒂斯说过“在艺术上，你的方法越简单，你的感觉越明显。”
2. 立体派艺术运动1907至1920年间出现于欧洲。他们反对传统的透视法、远景短缩法和造型技法，而是用线条结合成部份的画面，然后再依自己的 个性发展，进而够成立体形。
3. 《夜晚的咖啡馆》是由深绿色的天花板、血红的墙壁和不和谐的绿色家具组成的梦魇。金灿灿的黄色地板呈纵向透视，以难以置信的力量进入到红色背景之中，反过来，红色背景也用均等的力量与之抗衡。这幅画是透视空间和企图破坏这个空间的逼人色彩之间的永不调和的斗争。作品预示了超现实主义用透视作为幻想表现手段的探索。
