安德里亚 .曼坦那于1431年出生于帕朵阿，是意大利北方最重要的画家，他诞生在多纳泰罗曾工作过的帕杜亚城[也译帕都亚]。在这个北意的重要人文主义城市中，他对古典建筑和雕塑产生了浓厚兴趣，而从佛罗伦萨来的美术家又使他掌握了透视知识，这些情况共同影响着他的绘画创作。

　　开始时他师从斯夸乔内，正是斯夸乔内发现了他的天才，曼坦那很有野心，他在1447年与斯夸乔内撕毁协约。他早期的作品主要是模仿。

　　在为曼图亚公爵贡扎加服务期间，曼坦尼亚在公爵府内的新婚夫妻之室绘制了一组装饰壁画(1474)，表现路德维柯·贡扎加公爵一家的生活场面。画在该室天顶上的作品是追求视错觉效果的大胆尝试，这种作法被盛期文艺复兴的柯勒乔和17世纪的巴洛克画家进一步发展了。

　　在1448年，他接受了一项重要任务，绘制帕朵阿教堂的壁画。

　　1460年他来到曼图阿，并在此度过余生。曼坦那最伟大的作品作于1460年之后，其间他在曼图阿担任法庭艺术师。他对古董的浓厚兴趣使他与一些人文主义学者像菲利斯等人建立了深厚的友谊。

　　在1464年，他们装扮成罗马人，到嘎纳湖上泛舟。同样他的这一兴趣在他的作品中也得到了反映。他发明了一种绘画技术，使他的作品显示出一种古典主义的立体效果。曼坦那还在雕塑中颇有成就，这使得他的作品题材更为广泛。

　　1484年获爵士称号，这对一个艺术家而言是一种殊荣。

　　1506年去世。

　　曼坦尼亚的风格，以雄伟有力、感情充沛著称。他在早年曾受到乌切洛的透视法和多纳太罗的古典风格的影响，形成了坚实有力、准确细腻的表现手法。在《圣 赛巴斯蒂安》(约 1460)和《死去的基督》(约1501)等作品中，人物有如雕像一般坚实厚重，建筑物描绘得极为精确，一切都严格遵循透视法则。瓦萨利曾指出他笔下的人 物是石造的，这倒也点明了他的一个特点。
